Let's start with this question: Is there a difference between a cheap tie and an expensive one? The answer is a clear "yes".

The essential component in a tie is a piece of pretty fabric, usually silk.  In a cheap tie, this silk is of poor quality – less attractive, prone to damage, lightweight, poorly printed.  In the best ties, the silk is richer, thicker and more attractive.

In cheap ties, manufacturers make every effort to use as little silk as possible. This means wrapping a thin layer of silk around a piece of wool that provides the weight needed to tie the knot. In good ties, this lining is of a higher quality and the secondary silk covering the back of the front piece is also made of this silk. In the best ties, the entire tie is made of silk, as shown in the photo above.

The quality of these materials is obvious, but perhaps the most important indicator of quality for a tie is the quality of the bow tie. Poor quality ties are poorly tied - they lose their dimples in the knot, lack the weight to stay even, etc.

Does this mean you should buy an expensive tie? Just like any other piece of clothing, it depends on your financial resources and your willingness to do so. But now with the development of economic trade, Chinese tie makers have proven to the world that it is capable of manufacturing not only high quality and good prices, but also very good after sales service. This has made it possible for everyone to afford to wear a tie, maybe a business tie, maybe a wedding tie, or maybe a tie for everyday wear.
